BWB#55: 30 Questions To Build A Better Game Company

Hello friends,

Greetings from Utrecht!

It's the week before GamesCom, and I'm starting to feel those pre-conference jitters. For the first time ever, I'm staying in Dusseldorf instead of Cologne, because the hotel rates were simply INSANE this year. And in typical fashion, it seems like the trains between Dusseldorf and Cologne, my lifeline to the conference, won't be running. Yay...

Supposedly there's alternative transportation, and I haven't planned any meetings before 10am, so I'm sure it'll be fine, if suboptimal. On the bright side, I've got a schedule full of interesting meetings and catchups with some of my favorite industry people. Yay!

Today I'm sharing one of my most valuable coaching and consulting tools with you: the Next Level Performance Assessment.

30 Questions To Build A Better Game Company

If I asked you, right now, "Tell me about your company's performance level. How well are you running things?", would you have any idea how to answer?

And if I then asked if you feel like there's a level beyond where you are, and if so, would you like to reach it? What would you answer then?

If you're like most founders, your answer to the first question would be a bumbling "uh... probably fine?", and your answer to the second a resounding "YES".

To make it easier for my clients to gauge their performance level, I have created a short assessment that tells them where they stand on the three most important pillars of company performance: Strategy, Management, and Self-Aware Leadership.

Each is crucial for a company to truly flourish.

  • Without a good strategy, your team has no guidance with which to approach challenges and opportunities.
  • Without good management, even the best strategy is doomed to fail, and issues are likely to "fail upward", requiring the constant attention of the CEO and his team.
  • And without self-aware leadership, well... not much else matters, because you'll likely be repeating the same mistakes, over and over.

I ask all my clients to do this assessment, which serves as a benchmark for the hard-won improvements we'll gain while working together. When they do the test again later, they can see exactly how far they've come.

And now, I'm sharing that test with you.

The assessment comprises 30 questions, takes all of 3 minutes to complete, and will show you exactly how you are faring in each area.

Moreover, it will give you specific pointers for improving that depend on your personal score.

So let me ask again:

How well are you running things?

Would you like to know?

See you in two weeks!

Issue #86 Hello friends, Greetings from Utrecht! Lots of stuff happening behind the scenes currently. I've just rounded up two engagements with AAA studios, which might be prolonged after the summer. These have already been incredibly rewarding and insightful, and I'm looking forward to incorporating my learnings into the rest of my coaching. I'm working on a refined personal brand that will tie together all of the individual bits and pieces that I've cobbled together over the years. This...

Issue #85 Hello friends, Greetings from Utrecht! It's been an insanely busy period, with some incredible personal milestones that I'm excited to share with you. First off, I've recently started working with Valued Cultures, a US based coaching agency through which I'm now coaching top leadership at studios like Bethesda and MachineGames. If you had told me three years ago that I'd be coaching AAA studios, I simply would not have believed you. Second, including the people I'm coaching through...

Issue #84 Hello friends, Greetings from Utrecht! GDC is over, which means I can now start prepping for my favorite event: Reboot Develop Blue. I'm working on a new talk, based on my coaching work with game studios, that will touch on the various mistakes I see founders make with regards to running their studios. Before that though, I'm visiting Boden Game Changer in Sweden next week, to give both a talk and a workshop to some promising indie studios on the topic of studio management. Besides...
